What is an
Ice-Out Contest?
It’s a contest
where people make their best guess on when the ice on Lake Nipmuc melts enough for a forty
pound weight to drop through the ice. This weight will be attached to a
chair and sitting upon that chair will be Old Man Winter.
How will we
know the exact time the forty pound weight drops through the ice?
An extension cord
will be attached to an electric analog clock with a sweep second hand.
This clock will be protected from the weather. When the ice breaks, the
weight yanks on an extension cord and disconnects it from the clock. The
clock will show the exact time Old Man Winter
went through the ice.
Where will Old
Man Winter be located?
On December 15th,
you will be able to see him in front of the Mendon Greenhouse on Route
16. By mid-January, Old Man Winter will be moved to the ice off Kinsley
Lane. Here he will
patiently await the coming of Spring.
Will we be able
to see Old Man Winter on the Internet?
Absolutely! Old
Man Winter will be lit up at night. There will be a security camera and
a 24/7 webcam that will provide live viewing.
What is the
deadline for submitting tickets?
Tickets must be
submitted no later than midnight February 15, 2010.
How do you take
part in the contest?
Tickets are $5.00 each. On December 15th, tickets
will be available at the Mendon Greenhouse and the New England Steak
House. They may also be purchased on line at
lakenipmuc.org. All you have to do is fill out the ticket with your
contact information and the Month, Date, Hour and Minute you think the
ice will melt enough for the weight to trigger the timing mechanism.
Remember all tickets must be received no later than midnight February 15th,
2010. You must be at least 18 years of age to play.
How will the
winner be determined?
The winners will
be those who guess the closest to the exact Month, Date, Hour and Minute
of the winning time. The winning time will be when the ice on the lake melts enough to sink
the forty pound weight and stop the clock. In the unlikely event of a
tie, the prizes will be split.
What are the
prizes?
First Place
-$500. Second Place-$300. Third Place - $200. Fourth, Fifth or
Sixth Place -$100. each
Who will
benefit from the proceeds?
The proceeds will be evenly split between the
Lake Nipmuc Association and the Mendon Parks Department. Parks
Department monies will be used for classes in Environmental Education
for Mendon children and for the improvement of water quality at the Town
Beach.
Additional
Rules and disclaimers are outlined on the back of each ticket.
The Lake
Nipmuc Association would like to
extend warm wishes for a safe and healthy Holiday Season.
