She will follow up with another letter. Shirley attended four workshops at the COLAP annual meeting: 1. Stormwater Projects - 319 grants (EPA federal money) were discussed. Mendon was used as an example of whether it would qualify for this grant based on a CD they use called “Clean Water Tool Kit”. In conclusion, Mendon does not qualify for this grant because it will only fund projects based on “non-point” sources of pollution. 2. “What makes a successful Lake Association?” – discussed ways to generate funding. Examples given were raffles, betting, marketing, publicity, weekly newsletters (possibly monthly), communications, logos on materials, promotional items, political, town beaches and realtors. 3. Aquatic Invasive Species (Ken Wagner and Michelle Robinson of the DCR). $1billion per year is spent in the US on eradicating invasive species. Ninety-five percent of Florida’s lakes and ponds have invasive species. How do they get there? In Massachusetts 30% of lakes and ponds have invasive species carried by boats, bait buckets, aquariums, zebra mussel. Creates negative impact on property value and upsets ecology. There is a weed watchers group that will come in and discuss ways to manage invasive species. 4. Permitting (Mark Stimpson DEP/Ann Monoly DCR). This workshop focused on how to handle a Conservation Commission. They had a mock meeting discussing putting chemicals in well water for treatment purposes. What issues would come up to do this. Information was passed out on what is termed “eco-grass.” It is supposed to be the holy grail of grass. For more information go to ecograss.com. · Lake Monitoring – Still looking into the possibility of getting a water testing kit. · Goose committee – nothing to report at this time · Public Education committee – nothing to report at this time. · Website committee – Ted King maintains the website www.lakenipmuc.com. A cluster of milfoil was found at the northern end of the pond but was treated.
